Sydney Adventist Hospital has celebrated the installation of state-of-the-art technology into one of its cardiac catheter labs.
The latest generation Philips system was installed in the refurbished lab – which uses diagnostic imaging equipment to detect problems in the heart's arteries and chambers – with a spiritual blessing by Chaplain Julie Fehlberg.
Pastor Fehlberg said she had thought about the concept of the heart when reflecting on the meaning of the space to patients who attend New South Wales' largest private hospital, also known as the San.
“The Israelites had no concept or word for the brain,” she said. “And consequently, they imagined all intellectual activity took place in the heart.”
When the San’s full cardiac unit opened in 1979, it was the first commissioned for a private hospital in Australia. By the end of 2022, the cardiac catheter labs had hosted 3,300 procedures.
Adventist HealthCare CEO Brett Goods said the project was possible thanks to the support of the San Foundation, which raises funds to help the hospital grow.
“We are grateful to all those involved in the refurbishment," he said.
"We would also like to acknowledge our expert staff and cardiologists who will benefit from this latest upgrade."
