Sydney’s newest private hospital aims to redefine the healthcare experience for patients in the city’s northern suburbs, says the founder of its operator Wyvern Health.

Wyvern Private Hospital, a $100 million-plus state-of-the-art surgical and rehabilitation facility in Terrey Hills, officially opened in December 2024.

“Today is a monumental day for Sydney healthcare, with more residents in the Northern Beaches now able to access private surgical and rehabilitation services closer to home, and experience what is perhaps the state’s most natural and tranquil clinical setting,” Wyvern Health chairman Dr William Sears said at the launch.

Surrounded by pristine bushland, the hospital features eight operating theatres including a hybrid theatre and cardiac catheterisation lab, 76 surgical and inpatient beds, nine ICU beds, and clinical support units including medical imaging, pathology, rehabilitation, hydrotherapy pool and pharmacy.

It is located in a catchment region forecast to see a 23 percent rise in retiree-aged residents by 2031.

“Wyvern is the result of a decade of planning and the dedication of hundreds of healthcare professionals,” said Dr Sears, one of Australia’s leading spinal surgeons.

“We’re honoured to be entrusted with delivering care without compromise to our patients, doctors, staff and the Northern Beaches community.”

Wyvern Private Hospital was designed to be ‘by the doctors for the patients’.

Construction began in April 2022, requiring comprehensive biodiversity management and an environmental stewardship plan that included the planting of 2,500 banksia trees, installation of 39 nestboxes, and clearing of litter to protect local wildlife.

It is owned by Australian Unity Healthcare Property Trust and leased for 30 years to Wyvern Health, which operates under a doctor-owned model.

Australian Unity’s General Manager Healthcare Property, Chris Smith, said the facility would deliver “long-term income returns for investors whilst providing critical care to the community”.

“Australian Unity is proud to be partnering with Wyvern Health to deliver world-class health infrastructure to meet Sydney’s current and future needs,” he said.
