World-first system replaced at Sydney hospital

A new scanning system at Sydney’s St George Private Hospital is expected to improve diagnosis of heart problems, as well as bringing safety benefits for patients and staff.

The imaging technology, which reduces radiation doses, will allow specialists to get a clearer picture when performing interventional angiograms to search for blockages.

It replaces the South Sydney facility’s existing technology, which it introduced in 2013 as the world’s first commercially-installed radiation dose tracking system.

“The new Canon Alphenix system can deliver images with greater clarity and precision, designed to improve patient outcomes,” interventional cardiologist Dr Maurits Binnekamp said.

It will be used in St George Private Hospital’s cardiac catheterisation lab with x-ray procedures assisting the guidance of a catheter tube through a patient’s major arteries. 

Hospital CEO Peter Ridley said the system offered industry-leading dose optimisation technologies, reducing the radiation exposure for both patients and the surgical teams.  

“St George Private Hospital is committed to investing in technology to offer improved patient experience and outcomes,” Mr Ridley said.

“We’re pleased our new angiography equipment will reduce the amount of radiation present during procedures, benefiting both our patients and our people.”
